Sylvia Tam
Resident Musician (Percussion)
Tam currently is the resident musician (percussion) of Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble. Tam graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, majoring in Chinese percussion and minoring Western percussion. She had followed several teachers to learn percussions, including Mr Jason Leung (director of Refiner Drums), Mr Yim Hok Man (Percussion Principal of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra), Mr John Lee (frame drum soloist) and Mr Yi Ming (Xinjiang frame drum master). She is one of the members of the Hong Kong Chinese drum team “Refiner Drums”, directed by the professional percussionist Jason Leung and had won the Hong Kong Synergy 24 Drum Competition for 10 years. Tam had won awards in multiple percussion competitions, she received the Best Drummer award in the 15th Hong Kong Synergy 24 Drum competition 2017, Dagu Drum Solo Silver Award and Paigu Solo Brass Award in Taiwan Percussion Association competition etc.
She participated in different concerts and events in Hong Kong, Macau, Shanxi, Dunhuang, Taiwan, etc. From 2010 to 2018, she performed as a Refiner Drum’s member in Hong Kong Drum Festival concerts, the 10th Anniversary of Refiner Drum’s concert in 2017, and ‘Shaolin’ directed by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Chung Ying Theatre Company. She performed as a member of Lo Tung Lo Percussion Group, led by Principal Percussion of Hong Kong Sinfonietta Chau Chin-tung, included Sha Tin Town Hall Fun Day 2019 – Music Transcends 2.0, Hong Kong Week in Taiwan, Storm – Chau Chin-tung x HKMLCO, Percussion Concert by Chau Chin-tung, etc. In 2014, she performed with frame drum master John Lee in his recitals and concerts. In 2016, Tam was a member of The Experimental Vaudeville and did a multi-media theatre performance ‘Myth Of A Chanceable Constant’ as a performer and director.
For the coming years, she is still working on percussion techniques in order to reach the goal of drumming with multi-media.
